About Go QRP Nights

What is GQN?

Go QRP Nights (GQN) is a monthly amateur radio contest held on the last Saturday of every month (except February, which moves to the first Saturday in March). The contest runs from 8:00pm to 9:30pm NZST in winter and 9:00pm to 10:30pm NZDT in summer.

The contest is designed to challenge operators to make contacts using low power on the 40m and 80m bands. Whether you're a seasoned QRP operator or new to low-power operating, GQN provides a fun and supportive environment to test your skills and equipment.

The challenge

The core challenge of GQN is simple: make as many contacts as possible using no more than 10 watts of power. Both stations in a contact must be operating at QRP levels for the contact to count. This creates a level playing field where skill, antenna design, and propagation knowledge matter more than raw power.

For those seeking an even greater challenge, the contest recognises two additional power levels:

  • QRPp - 1 watt or less
  • QRPpp - 100 milliwatts or less (new for 2026)

Who can participate?

GQN is open to all licensed amateur radio operators. You don't need to be a member of any club or organisation to participate. Simply operate within the contest rules, keep a log, and submit it within 21 days of the contest date.

Even if you're not competing for points, you're welcome to make contacts with GQN stations during contest hours. Many participants enjoy the social aspect of the contest as much as the competition.

Portable and group operation

GQN encourages portable operation. Set up in a park, at a beach, on a hilltop, or anywhere away from home. To qualify as portable, you must use an independent power source (battery, solar, generator, etc.) and a non-permanent antenna. Portable operators earn bonus points and compete for the Brass Monkey award for winter portable operation.

Group operation is also encouraged. Get together with fellow amateurs at a single location and operate as a group. Each operator uses their own callsign, and all group members earn bonus points for group contacts.

2026 award categories

At the end of the 2026 season, awards will be presented for:

  • GQN Award - Most total points overall
  • CW Award - Most CW points
  • Band Awards - Most points on 40m and 80m
  • QRPp Award - Most QRPp (≤1W) points
  • QRPpp Award - Most QRPpp (≤100mW) points
